In recent weeks, Spotify has come under fire as artists around the world churn away from the platform. Many refuse to let their art fund technologies of destruction or uphold systems that exploit creativity.
But Spotify is only a symptom. The disease runs deeper: a global system that reduces the higher purpose of art to mere entertainment, and artists themselves to content producers fighting for survival.
This is our moment to confront these root problems.
π± Root Causes of Exploitation in the Music Industry
Spotify, like all organizations, is built on ideological foundations. And in this case, those foundations are steeped in materialism:
Materialism replaces meaning β The higher purpose of the arts is lost.
Power is concentrated β A few control the platform while millions fight for scraps.
Knowledge and wealth are hoarded β leaving artists disempowered and divided.
This is not new. These patterns mirror imperialism and colonization, now reincarnated in industries like music.
π₯ The Cannibalistic, Competitive Landscape
An ideology rooted in materialism creates idols as symbols of success. These idols fuel:
A survivalist, competitive culture where artists compete for fame and streams.
The rise of investor culture, where wealth becomes power and purpose is diluted.
A system where the artistβs spiritual gift is traded for temporary material gain.
This idol-focused, cannibalistic landscape divides us and leaves us vulnerable to exploitation.
β How Do We Fight Back?
To counter systemic exploitation, we need systemic solutions:
Segregation of knowledge β countered with access to knowledge.
Segregation of wealth β countered with distribution of wealth.
Segregation of power β countered with democratization.
And the exploitation of individuals β countered with systems for sustainable income.
Innovation must meet innovation. Ideas must meet better ideas.
π A Digital Union for the Arts
The solution lies in organization and sovereignty.
We need a digital union and institution for artists, designed to:
β
Protect the spiritual life of the artist.
β
Tackle sustainability at its root.
β
Empower artists as sovereign individuals in a sovereign organization.
Thanks to support from the Canada Council for the Arts, weβve developed the infrastructure: a web and mobile app capable of doing what streaming platforms and social media doβbut with a higher purpose.
β¨ Our Mission: Peace, Knowledge, and Sovereignty
We stand for:
π± Peace through understanding β to eradicate the ignorance that breeds war.
π Knowledge as power β to restore the glory of our shared humanity.
ποΈ Sovereignty for artists β to reclaim the arts and ourselves.
This is our time.
This is our movement.
Join us. Together, we can end exploitation in the arts and build something worthy of our humanity.
